Air Balancing: Ways to Avoid Hot and Cold Spots

By AFM Heating & Cooling

Air Balancing: Ways to Avoid Hot and Cold Spots
The size, layout, and interior furnishings of every property are different, which means every HVAC system must be tailor fit to ensure adequate air distribution and temperature equality throughout the space. So, to help you out, we’ve put together a list of ways you can help guarantee air balance in your home and avoid hot and cold spots with the unit you currently have.

Tip #1: Test A Two-Degree Offset

If you have a separate thermostat for each floor of your home, consider setting them to different temperatures to help maintain balance. For instance, if you have your first floor set to 70 degrees, set the system upstairs to 72 degrees. Heat rises, and having them both set to the same temperature will only make your upstairs much warmer than the rest of your home.

Tip #2: Avoid Placing Electronics Near Any Thermostats

Electricity, like that found in your phone, tablets, laptops, televisions, speakers, and any other devices, generates heat. Of course, this means putting any electronics near your thermostat can wreck havoc on your home’s temperature controls. You might notice your heat doesn’t kick on nearly as often as it should, or your air conditioner won’t shut off event once it’s well past freezing inside, when really the problem is just that it senses your home is warmer than it actually is.

Tip #3: Check Your Insulation

If too much hot or cool air is escaping your home and running your utility bills through the roof, you might have a problem with your insulation. Fortunately, this is a rather easy fix; you just have to recognize it’s a problem first.

Tip #4: Make Sure Your HVAC Unit Is The Right Size

If your HVAC system is too small for your home, no amount of reorganizing will help stabilize your interior temperatures or lower your bills. The only way to do this is by making sure, by consulting a professional, that your HVAC unit is properly sized and installed to guarantee maximum efficiency – plain and simple.

Tip #5: Prevent Any Restrictions In Airflow

The fastest way to prevent balance in your home as far as air quality and temperature is concerned is to block all your vents and registers with furniture and other items that restrict airflow. Ideally, your vents should have at least 18 inches of free space.

For more tips and tricks on avoiding hot and cold spots, and balancing the air inside your home, we encourage you to consult our capable HVAC professionals at AFM Heating & Cooling today.
